Why "Museum City"?

Changsha's museums are not only inside exhibition halls — they are scattered across the ancient streets and the rivers, hills and townships of the surrounding counties. The Xiang River links provincial flagship museums with municipal landmarks; the Tanheli site holds the southern glory of the Bronze Age; and a corridor of Kaifu Ban Cang, Huaminglou and Wenjiashi marks the red footprint of modern China.

  • Mawangdui Tombs: Lady Xin Zhui, T-shaped silk banner — unearthed over half a century ago
  • Zoumalou Wu Slips: Changsha holds roughly half of all bamboo slips ever found nationwide
  • Four-Goat Square Zun: the bronze treasure unearthed at the Tanheli site
  • Red heritage: Qingshuitang, Shuyuan Road, Bancang, Huaminglou, Wenjiashi — strung like pearls

Visitor Tips

Spend two minutes before you go to save yourself the detours. Below are general tips and recommended routes for Changsha's museums — always check each venue's latest official notice.

Reservation & ID

The vast majority of venues are free of charge, but nearly all require real-name reservation: Hunan Museum, Changsha Museum, the Jiandu Museum and the Geology Museum all accept reservations via their official WeChat accounts or websites. Bring your original ID card.

Typical Hours

Most museums are open Tue–Sun 9:00–17:00, closed Mondays. Watch for exceptions: the Jiandu Museum is closed Tuesdays, Tanheli runs 9:00–16:00, and Wenjiashi has seasonal time slots.

Getting Around

Metro Line 1 links Changsha Museum (Beichen Delta), the Jiandu Museum (Huangxing Square / Nanmenkou), the Geology Museum and the Science & Technology Museum (Shengzhengfu · Qingfeng). The Longping Rice Museum is directly served by Line 6.

Etiquette

Inside galleries, please do not use flash and do not touch exhibits. Popular venues (especially Hunan Museum) fill up fast on weekends — book several days ahead.
